Xbox Reverb: Enabling Fans to Customize Gigs Online

By Cate Sevilla

Last night saw the brilliant launch of Xbox Reverb, a new music initiative that gets "bands and fans" talking, with Magistrates and DJ extraordinaire, Calvin Harris on the decks.

Your world online is customized and tailored to your own tastes, and Xbox Reverb are hoping to do the same with your gigs. Basically, music fans "sign up" to Xbox Reverb's Facebook page, follow @xboxreverb on Twitter, and give feedback on how gigs should look and feel, based on the criteria that the Xbox Reverb team have given them.

This feedback includes helping with everything from the supporting act for a gig, the design of the flyer, along with how the bands and musicians should be doing their hair for the gig. (OK. The last one is a lie. I made that up. But how amazing would it be to be able to style someone like Lady GaGa's hair?)

These DIY gigs will be taking place all around the UK from the end of September, and some lucky winners will be able to attend the events, as well. Personally, I wouldn't exactly want to give my favorite bands ideas for their gigs unless I was actually invited, but I suppose at least having the prospect of possible attending one of these gigs is quite cool.

Aside from Magistrates and Calvin Harris, Danananakryod will be performing for a Xbox Reverb gig on the 29th of September in Birmingham, which will then be followed by Pulled Apart by Horses in Leeds on October 5th, and then with Esser playing an exclusive gig in December.

(I've not heard of these bands, but I'm assuming that's because they're *cool*.)

Bringing the whole "social" aspect to their gigs, Xbox Reverb will also be passing out "Reverb Passes" at the gigs, which are essentially wristbands that let you "post live tweets" and comments and "status updates" at Touchpoints that are planted across the venue. I'm assuming these Touchpoints are basically computers for people to update their Facebook and Twitter accounts from if they're too skint to afford Data bundle on their phone. Exciting for the 18-year-old with a crappy three year old Nokia, not so exciting for those with iPhones and whatever new touchscreen fancy smart phone the kids are using these days.

The Calvin Harris Xbox Reverb gig a few members from the BitchBuzz team attended last night was quite cool. I'd never heard of Magistrates before - they were quite cool and sounded a lot like what would happen if The Killers and The Scissor Sisters had a lovechild. And Calvin Harris was, well, good looking and nicely dressed and plaid some fantastic music. I was disappointed he never played "Loveshack" or "Oops...I Did it Again" but I overall his set was quite good.
