Back in the summer of 2006, I had recently moved to London. I was unemployed, kinda broke, and definitely bored.
One afternon I found myself in Waterstones, and I came across a book called My Horizontal Life. It was written by a comedian named Chelsea Handler, and it was all about her one night stands and ridiculous sex life. I had never heard of Handler before, but the book looked pretty funny, so buy it I did.
I finished My Horizontal Life in less than two days, and it’s still one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. (I only advise you don't read it in public, unless you're cool with everyone hear you snort while you laugh.)
Cut to 2010, and Chelsea Handler is better known as Chelsea Lately, the name of her late-night talk show on E!. She’s also a number one best selling author for her second book, Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelesea.
Now, just days before the release of her third book, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang, Perez Hilton is reporting that Chelsea Lately makes "almost the same amount on ad revenue as Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report”. More importantly, her revenue is on the rise, while Stephen Colbert's is apparently beginning to flat line.
Chelsea Lately might be incredibly politically incorrect, offensive, and – as far as late night talk shows go – a bit rough around the edges. However, give me Chelsea, Chuy, Heather “Long Boobs” MacDonald and the flame-haired Brad over Leno or Jimmy Kimmel any day!
Chelsea Handler is one of the funniest, and ballsiest comeidans of our time, and she does it all with a fantastic wardrobe, a margarita in one hand and a Belvedere Martini in the the other. She owns who she is, can laugh at herself, and isn't afraid to say what she thinks or even challenge the network her show is hosted on.
More importantly, Chelsea helps showcase and give new comediens primetime exposure. More specifically she has helped raise the profiles of female comediens such as Sarah Colona, Whitney Cummings, and Christina Pazsitzky.
While Chelsea Handler isn’t exactly your traditional feminist icon, (GASP! HORROR! She's posed for Playboy!) she is constantly standing up for and supporting other women. She'll call bullshit on people who, for example, defend Tiger Woods and is constantly pointing out the double standards for women in Hollywood and the media.
Plus, the guests on her show are usually women. Of course she has male guests and women like Katie Price (Best! Interview! Ever!) and the E! Network’s sweethearts such as The Girls Next Door and the Kardashians - but usually Chelsea brings on women who are of a similar mindset to her. She interviews women who love her and women that she loves back, like Mary Louise Parker, Danika Patrick, and Amanda Seyfriend.
It’s incredibly refreshing to not only see a talk show with a female host where the subject matter goes beyond self esteem and relationship troubles, but where the guests feel like they can cut loose, have a drink, and be themselves.
Chelsea Handler brings out the best in people, while making fun of them, herself, and the ridiculous of the media and our celebrity obsessed culture at the same time.
Plus, she has an assistant named Chuy, a dog named Chunk, and is sponsored by Belvedere vodka. If there was ever a woman to have a serious crush on, Chelsea Handler is it.
Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang is available on Amazon.com from March 9,2010. Chelsea Lately is on E! Monday through Friday at 11pm in the US and weeknights at 10:30 in the UK.
