Why do Women Hate Keira Knightley?

By Cate Sevilla

I've always been a big fan of Keira Knightley. I think she's a brilliant actress, she's gracious in interviews and you tend not to see her falling out of Camden clubs with a nose full of coke. So, why do other women hate her so much?

Is it because she's thin? Because she's actually touched James McAvoy and they haven't? Because they think she's anorexic and can't get over the fact that she's not?

Whatever it is, apparently Keira doesn't give a shit.

She recently told the London Paper that:

"If you put yourself in the public forum, it's what you put yourself up for. I don't need to read it. Manipulation is something women do a lot. Women get obsessed with other women - love them or hate them. That line is very easy to cross."

Keira also talked about Tanya Gold's article in The Guardian that claimed that so many women hate Keira Knightley, that we bond over it:

"If you want to befriend a woman, ask her the question, 'What do you think of Keira Knightley?' In the resulting torrent of bile and loathing, you will bond. She will say, "I hate Keira Knightley. She's such a terrible actress. She looks like a stoat. And those teeth! She makes my fists itch!' It is a Pavlovian response. Hatred of Keira is like menstruation; all women share it.

...We have hated Knightley for being so thin and talentless and having terrible teeth....For weighing less than an actual domino when she played a character called Domino in Domino."

Keira responded by simply stated that she's "doing a good thing for women, then", by giving us something to bond over. (Be still my heart. That's such a good line.)

Really, I don't get the Keria hatred. She's not a shit actress. Sure The Pirates of the Carribean were a little rough, but so was Orlando Bloom's acting. Yes, she's thin. But, while some of us may not want to face this, some women are just naturally skinny. And Keira is one of them. She's an actress, they're paid to be thin and beautiful. It's part of their job. And I think it's because of this that Keira is thinner than she would be if, say, she were a blogger and sat at home eating peanut butter toast all day.

Get over it.

Just as you'd get your panties in a bunch if someone were to say that they hated Beth Ditto with a passion because she has bad teeth and was fat - lay off Keira for being thin. It works both ways. Don't hate on the thin girls.

I don't really get the Keira hatin' either. I think she's cute, and not a bad actress. But then, it has always seemed to me that women like to hate on each other (myself included, unfortunately) as a general rule. Even though I do it, I don't really get it. I really think we make things worse for each other.

I am pretty opposed to Beth Ditto for her irresponsible advocating of obesity and I think Keira Knightly seems alright, she's an actress, she acts, what's to hate? And yeah, some girls are just skinny. Good on her for reacting in such a mature fashion.

I've never been able to stomach her pouty acting but hating her for her weight is definitely unnecessary. I appreciate that Hollywood actresses are paid to look a certain way which the moneymen have figured sells, and I might disagree with their strategy of insisting everyone is rail thin, but that doesn't give me the right to hate her for happening to physically fit that mold. I suspect a lot of it is jealousy - even though I'd like to be thinner than I am, I never wanted to be Knightley thin, so perhaps that's why I'm able to not care how tiny she is, whereas I would love to look like Rebecca Romijn and that's why I sometimes want to slap her upside the head. (That was a joke, btw).

I don't hate her, she is definitley attractive, but equally she showed her acting limitations when playing Lizzie Bennett. To mess up in that role is a wasted opportunity. She also does a strange gutting out thing with her jaw, which is really distracting. That said, I'm giving the kid another go and will go to see The Duchess - I've got my fingers crossed she's improved on her acting abilities since P&P.

I must admit I've never been a fan. But that pout! And that posh, slightly screechy voice! Nope. I just can't get over 'em.

After all the roles she's had, sharing the stage with some of the most consumate actors in the world, one would think some of it would have rubbed off on her by now. I don't hate the girl, but in all honesty, she is a terrible actress. I have yet to see a decent performance of hers and yet she's been in the spot light globally as a major startlette in film for almost 8 years now. If I see a movie advertised where she has a major part, I sigh and think to myself "oh well, another movie ruined"...
