Where to Stay: The Glasshouse, Edinburgh

By Cate Sevilla

If you are lucky enough at some point to find yourself in the glorious capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, you are more than likely going to need a fabulous place to lay your pretty little head in the evening. Unless, of course, you’re a fan of sleeping on park benches or happen to have friends situated all around the globe.

I recenly embarked on a trip to Edinburgh and had the priveleaged opportunity to stay at The Glasshouse, and if you’re looking for a lush and perfectly located hotel to stay at it, The Glasshouse is just what you're looking for.

Location

Located in the “New Town” side of Edinburgh, The Glasshouse is situated at the foot of Calton Hill, and is just a five minute walk from Princes Street and Waverly train station. The façade of the hotel is a 150 year old once the possession of Lady Glenorch Church, giving it a lovely, historical feel.

The Rooms

The Glasshouse has 65 guest rooms, including two deluxe suites, one of which has its own Jacuzzie, sauna, and a lounge area with floor to ceiling windows with views over the two acre roof terrace and the city of Edinburgh.

The suites are named after different types of local whisky, for example I stayed in The Bowmore suite, which has a complimentry decanter filled with Bowmore whisky, with a brief explaination of the whisky, as well as where it’s from.

The suites themselves are absolutely spectacular, and one can assume that the standard of the suites is a direct indicator that any and all of the rooms in this grand hotel are absolutely amazing.

The views from the balconies are spectacular, the bed is one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept it, and its the lush little extras such as a heated tile floor in the bathroom and “black out” curtains there are controlled by a switch near the headboard of the bed that make it extra special, and all that more comfortable.

The prices for the rooms start at the higher end of affordable, but the rooms are worth every penny.

The Breakfast

In my opinion, what makes or breaks a hotel stay is the hotel's breakfast options. (Yes, it really  just does come down to food with me.) While a Continental Breakfast is included with all room prices, I suggest paying the extra to have a Full Scottish Breakfast delivered to your room in the morning, so you can have breakfast in bed.

I’ve had this done before different hotel chains from Thistles hotels to Hilton in San Francisco, and The Glasshouse’s breakfast in bed has by far been the best I’ve ever, ever had.

Not only did it arrive bang on time and piping hot, but it was the most delicious and immaculately presented breakfast I’ve had in a very, very long time.

Indeed, a Full Scottish at The Glasshouse is every bit as pleasurable as it sounds.

Sweet Little Extras

Whether you’re on a quick business trip or romantic getaway, chances are you’re not just looking for a bed to sleep in and a roof over your head. It’s the little extras, such as WiFi and breakfast that can make a hotel a favourite, or make you never want to visit there again.

The Glasshouse is chocked full of spectacular extras, such as there being Wireless Broadband available in the guest rooms, luxury toiletries (and not just a genearic bar of soap called SOAP or a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner *shudder*), and even a complimentry shoe shine.

Their in-room safes have a laptop recharding point inside (amazing, right?), as well as their “honesty bar” which is a self service bar with snacks that are - gloriously and totally - free. (Hence, the honesty part of it.) If you’re working, there is also a Business Centre with secretarial suppoert and WiFi, as well as 24 hour room service, just in case you’re in meetings all day and didn’t get a chacne to eat...or stayed out so late you missed dinner. (Why get a kebab when you can have a Welsh Rarebit delivered to your room?)

However, another fantastic perk of The Glasshouse is the rooftop garden, which is perfect for drinks at sunset or a bit of peace and quiet.

Edingburgh

The Glasshouse is like having a luxurious home away from home, and it’s the place to stay in Edinburgh as far as I’m concerned!
