Va-Va-Voom! Vintage at Goodwood

By Jo Gifford

OK, this really is exciting stuff. Hang onto your heels ladies, the best festival to land in vintageville has arrived and it's happening this August.  VIntage at Goodwood celebrates 5 decades of British cool charting cultural trends through music, fashion, film, art, and it quite frankly smacks of pure, unadulterated genius.

Wayne Hemingway - Mr Red or Dead to fashionista fans of indie '90s fashion - is the brains and creativity behind one of this Summers most unusual, exciting and innovative events running over three days from  August 13-15 at the gorgeously English Goodwood estate in rural Sussex.  This landmark idea is the first of it's kind to harness British culture from the past by celebrating,  in Festival of Britain style, a true patriotic blaze of creative industries which have shaped our pasts and map out our futures.

Right, let's get to the good stuff - there is a pop up high street including Waitrose, Fortnum and Maison, Cath Kidston, The Body Shop, Oxfam ( with a façade from 1948), De Longhi and a Penguin books library. It also has a beauty salon, hairdressers and '70s curry house. Ah. See what I mean? This really is cool.  Not a burger van in sight.

Vintage at Goodwood High Street Visual

The sustainable high street will be home to interactive events, talks and shopping experiences such as make do and mend workshops, a Bonhams auction house and a 40's torch tent with silver service. Wayne and his partner Geradine will also launch at the unique Abbey Road store on the red carpeted high street accessories specifically designed by Hemingway Design and produced by EMI. Dribbling yet? You will be.

If you fancy a change from the high street there is of course the world's largest vintage marketplace. Second hand has never been so cool. Have a good old rummage for some unique finds then chill out in a '50s tearoom or pop to  the vintage cinema. while the kids, if you choose to take them, hang out in a replica Butlins complete with redcoats.

Musical sets curated by the likes of Mike Flowers and Snowboy will be the soundtrack to what promises to be a groundbreaking event where you can: pick up a picnic from Waitrsoe by Delia; visit a time capsule and be made up and coiffed in a decade of your choice; hear fashion talks from Zandra Rhodes and Celia Birtwell; take tea an Fortnum and Masons; find yourself some glamourous camping with butler service; check out Aswad, the Buzzcocks, the Faces and some good old fashioned Northern Soul Wigan Casino style all at the same event.

Loving Wayne Hemingway and his outlandish, fantasticly kitsch mind.

Clear the diary - VIntage at Goodwood is here, the festival of our lives!
