Following the readings modern hipster manual stuffhipstershate dictates, I have another sneaking suspicion of what Hipsters might hate, beyond functional mirrors, the relentless anguish of January and February, Minimalist Apartments and missing out on trends?
To follow this stereotype for the next 200 words, whilst hipsters have a 60% chance* of owning an iPhone they view Apple stores as representing "a kind of rabid fan boy-ism that hipsters just don’t truck with: Rampant consumerism that impels one to wait in long, winding lines." Despite this, they're likely to posses one of the best iPhone camera apps about: Hipstamatic.
Similarly, adding to the relentless anguish of January and February, new exhibition Hipstamatics may make them roll their eyes. Not us though. Apps that turn poorly-taken photos of beer bottles, murky skylines and shoes into some of the most fascinating results ever with their vintage effect filters go down well in our book.
Based on the 1982 analog cameras like those developed by Bruce and Winston Dorbowski, the app replicated the experience of vintagey photos. (On droids the closest is the FXCamera app, though sadly there's not an FXCamera exhibition taking place. Lucky too, as it's not a catchy name).
The exhibition will bring the best submitted work sported on the Hipstamatic blog to the 'real world'.
"From the hundreds of pictures on the blog the Orange Dot Gallery will showcase 157 prints – the same number as the amount of original analog cameras produced. A homage to both the history and future of Hipstamatics the exhibition will showcase some of the best works featured on the site to date, from both the submitted snaps and their own specially sourced and exclusive work."
Having a peek at the blog, it looks like a lovely celebratory outing. One sentiment I like follows Bruce Dorbowski quoted phrase of: “It doesn’t matter if the photos aren’t prefect. As long as people are capturing memories, I will be happy.”
The exhibition is open to the public 13th - 31st January, it'll be taking place near Russel Square and the target audience is unsurprisingly not hipsters.
