The MOBO Awards Nominations

By Warren Beckett

If the Brit Awards and The Mercury Music Prize don’t cover the acts you love then look no further -the MOBO nominations are here.

The MOBO’s have always been the streetwise, edgy big brother to the Brits; with an array of diverse awards categories covering everything from Gospel to Grime. This year the 2011 MOBO Awards will be held in Glasgow on the 5th of October.  The MOBO’s plan to give a special award to Amy Winehouse, to commemorate her music and pay tribute to her memory. In 2007 she performed two songs at the MOBO’s and very deservedly won Best UK Female. Let’s have a look at some of this years nominations in the major categories.

Looking at the shortlist it seems like there might be some rivalry between Adele and JessieJ who go head to head in virtually every category, Best Song, Best Album and Best UK act. In the International Act shortlist Beyonce and Rihanna both appear, although new upcoming stars like Nicki Minaj and Aloe Blacc might be more deserving winners. Peckham’s own Katy B must be enjoying nominations from both the Mercury Music Prize and the MOBOs, but then both Adele and Tinie Tempah have also been nominated for the Mercury Prize – I wonder which one they’d prefer to win.

This years MOBO show will feature a Boyz II Men reunion, to celebrate 20 years in music. Also performing on the night will be Jessie J, Katy B and American R’n’B princess Alexis Jordan. Jason Derulo will not only perform but is also co-hosting the ceremony.  Interestingly this years MOBO’s feature a category that is voted for solely by the public – not unusual, but they have decided to hold the voting for the Best Newcomer on the official MOBO Facebook page
