Singer Spotlight: Country Rock Girl Neko Case

By Liz Abinante

'Country' is one of those musical genres that can't seem to escape its well earned reputation. Most people can't help but thing of twangs, cowboy boots and hats, and red necks when they hear country music. And I can't really blame them. But Neko Case is an entirely different country singer.

When people ask me if I listen to country, I tell them I used to, but don't really anymore. Except for Neko Case. Then they ask "who is Neko Case?" She doesn't always get mainstream radio play - even though she should - and I often find myself trying to describe her sound. The best thing I can come up with?

Alternative-indie-rock-folk-country.

A lot of people are familiar with Neko Case as a member of The New Pornographers. Her musical career goes far beyond her stint with The New Pornographers: Neko Case has almost 15 albums to which she has made significant contributions to.

Her fifth independent studio album, Middle Cyclone, was released in April 2009 and is full of songs anyone would be happy singing their heart out too. Check out the video for "People Got A Lotta Nerve", the first single off the album:

Like any singer worth their salt, Case penned most of the tracks on her latest record. Middle Cyclone is full of catchy choruses and witty one liners that would make the most talented lyricist a little bit jealous.

Of course, she is still technically country. There's a little bit of twang in her singing voice, but it suits her lyrics and musical composition. Her voice has a beautiful range, and she doesn't extend herself or belt out chords unnecessarily just to prove she can sing (Jessica Simpson, I'm talking to you).

Give Neko Case a try. Even if you're not a country fan, there's a little bit of something for everyone on Middle Cyclone. Some people might look at you a little funny, but who are they and what do they know?

Favorites on Middle Cyclone include: "This Tornado Loves You", "Vengeance is Sleeping", and "Fever". Middle Cyclone, and Case's other albums, are available on iTunes, Amazon, and at most other music retailers.
