Upon first seeing commercials for 50/50, its aims seem pretty clear: to be that funny movie about cancer. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogan, the idea seems plausible. As the film’s premier moved closer, however, I caught a glimpse of another trailer whose mood was decidedly darker and, bluntly put, depressing. A movie about cancer that is also light hearted and funny is a very difficult feat indeed.

If BitchBuzz was a print magazine, we would have had Miranda July on our cover at least 3 times already. She’s an artist, filmmaker, writer...and she has great hair. Hello.July has a new film out called The Future, which she has written, directed, and stars in. (Maybe she should be the poster girl for “I don’t know how she does it!” rather than Sarah Jessica Parker. Just a thought.)

For fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the news of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return to primetime television was a long awaited one. Finally, the beloved SMG would be back on our television screens, this time as twin sisters Siobhan Martin and Bridget Kelly in Ringer.

Ever fantasised about killing your boss? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.Bosses. We all have them. If you’re lucky they’re nice, but it’s more likely that they’re not nice. Iin fact, they might be downright horrible. It’s a universal concept, brought to the screen by Seth Gordon, former documentary maker behind the amazing King of Kong and Freakonomics. What does a documentary maker know about making comedies? Well, Gordon has also worked on ...

I don’t have a television. I smugly offer that personal factoid at every available opportunity. I think this is one of my healthiest habits, and I wish more households followed my lead. The average American watches four hours of television a day, and 99 percent of American households have at least one TV. By those numbers, I figure I am in the top 1% of humanity.

Precariously riding that wave that is new fall television is ABC’s newest, Pan Am. As far as ideas go, it’s a great one. Taking place in the 1960s, Pan Am is rife with opportunities for juicy plot developments. Beautiful ladies in vintage garb, the women’s movement, radical politics, international locales, it’s hard to imagine a dull hour. Still, Pan Am’s pilot feels a bit lacking and stiff.

If the thought of dancing being banned makes you want to tear up your tutu with rage and throw your tap dancing shoes at someone, then you’ll probably remember Footloose – but will the remake have the charm of the original? The current Hollywood obsession for remakes appears to be continuing unabated. It was with a heavy heart that I sat down to watch the latest instalment in this worrying trend - a remake of the classic 1984 film Footloose.

The Woman is a horror film. The basics are that there’s a woman (her character is just named The Woman) who lives out in the woods. She is wild, a part of nature, it’s alluded to that she was raised by wolves, and upon our first meeting with her - she kills ones with her bare hands. She doesn’t speak English, she wears barely-there jungle clothing, she’s an animal - and yet she’s somehow managed to give herself Bettie Page style fringe. Maybe she used a sharp rock and he...

Drive, more so than just movie, is a highly stylized piece of art. Thinking of it in those terms, it’s rather fucking brilliant. Comprised of iconic movie moments, and, simply put, beautiful to look at, so many scenes could easily exist as only stills. The film’s plot is as slow as molasses, coming as a surprise toward the movie’s middle and exploding in cringe worthy violence. Moments tell the story, and the film’s gory undertone makes it special. Our driver, for all his good ...
