Pedro Almodovar's 'The Skin I Live In'

An Almodovar film is a special thing. They exist outside the spectrum of normal story telling. Always riveting and unexpected, they are pieces constructed of so many layers, that they keep giving and giving with each revisit. His latest, The Skin I Live In, is not the type of film Almodovar, famously championed as a director for women since his 1988 film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, has become famous for. It comes from a much more sinister place. It’s a ...

Must See: The 'Lost in Lace' Art Exhibition

The Gas Hall of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery has been transformed. Gone are the gloom, skulls and devil horns of the previous Home of Metal exhibition to be replaced with something lighter and shimmeringly softer.

Book Review: 'Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?'

I have a special love for Mindy Kaling. As Kelly Kapoor on NBC’s The Office she is hilariously childish and conceited. Perhaps my favorite thing about her portrayal of Kelly is that in playing the stereotype, she plays against stereotype. Kelly Kapoor was your high school’s nicest mean girl, and Kaling does this so well it’s hard to believe she isn’t exactly that in real life.

NaNoWriMo: Get Your Novel Going!

It takes audacity to assume you've got a novel in you, although more and more people lately seem to find that audacity regularly -- pity they're mostly illiterate celebrities who pay someone to do the paperwork. Regular women often have more difficulty taking up the proverbial pen because they lack the chutzpah, but also because they lack the time. It's all that unpaid labour that's not really on the clock but somehow takes up an awful lot of hours.

No Birds Eye View Film Festival in 2012

Many of us were shocked and saddened to hear in late October that the Birds Eye View film festival won’t be happening in 2012 due to lack of funding. The festival’s founder and creator Rachel Millward says that the festival will be back, but without the money, a full-blown festival cannot happen this coming year.

The Help: One of the Best Films of the Year

Earlier this summer, I continuously heard whisperings of a movie called The Help. I’d see the title on blog posts and in magazine articles, but I never paid much attention as the film wasn’t in UK theatres. However, when I finally did book myself a premier seat at my local Odeon to watch it, I was absolutely blown away.

Put the Kink in Your ink at Eroticon 2012

One of the undeniable effects of the ebook revolution is the explosion of erotica and erotic romance particularly for female readers. Freed from the dead giveaway of the saucy cover, women now fill up their Kindles and mobile devices with a glorious variety of fun smut and sexy takes. It's about time someone got some of the practitioners of this writing genre together.

Music Review: A Very She & Him Christmas

I once had beef with Zooey Deschanel. It was a problem that stemmed from the fact that while I love the doe eyed and quirky celebrity, she is, and it does truly pain me to say this, not the greatest actor. Sure, she does well in films in which she plays herself, someone eccentric, full of wit and sarcasm, but has had trouble moving beyond this.
