Whilst most of us experience storytelling of some kind in our childhood, it tends to be something we stop indulging in as we grow up, turning instead to TV, films and computer games. But are these forms of escapism any more effective? Or are we missing out on a far greater, more personal, interactive experience?

In spring 2004, when Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released in cinemas, I was one of those people who went to the earliest preview showing possible. My friends and I got up at 7am or something in order to get near the front of the queue. And believe me, this was no mean feat. We were in our first year at university and 7am wasn’t a time we were usually aware of. After the film had finished, we had some lunch and went back to watch it again. At some point I rememb...

Before I start, I feel like this post should come with a disclaimer: I used to have no interest whatsoever in Lady Gaga. Actually, I was massively prejudiced against something that to me looked like a crime against music… And then I got curious and watched a few videos, stumbled upon photographs of the Gagster and decided that someone who goes out with a lobster on her head can’t be completely bad.

The latest addition to the wonderful, tucked away world of Seven Dials is Euphorium Bakery. Located in the center of the Thomas Neal Center off of Earlham Street (and with a currently unmarked location on Shorts Garden) this location of Euphorium is a bit different than all of the rest.

On the way back from a matineé of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, a guy sat behind me on the bus chatting on his mobile phone about the rough weekend he'd had. Not, he said, because he had drunk far too much—which he had—but because he knew the real source was her and if she were to come back, he thought he might know the right thing to say now. Everything, of course, would be different this time.

We all maintain ardent opinions about the American invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the subsequent and seemingly endless wars, but how much do we actually know about these regions and their daily struggles? A holier-than-thou we-command-all kind of attitude from the "liberators" doesn't imply they understand what the people of war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan really need.

On a recent trip to San Francisco, I made my way up to Ghirardelli Square, not really sure of what to expect. Tucked in at the base of the iconic Ghirardelli sign, Ghirardelli Square offers a lovely collection of shops and places to wistfully spend your day. From Lori’s Diner, to Kora’s Cupcakes, to Lola of North Beach, there are plenty of kitschy venues to grab a bite, or even find the perfect gift.

When I tell people I'm from The Fens I can generally guarantee that they'll have one of two reactions. There's the ‘Where the hell is that?’ one or the classic ‘Wow, right out in the sticks! Do you know anyone with webbed toes?’ response. Unless the person in question is actually from East Anglia as well, in which case you bond over stuff like ...
