The Printed Word: 7 Fantastic Magazines

I used to suffer from a serious addiction to glossy magazines. I'd easily buy four or five monthly titles, plus the odd weekly and a bi-annual or two. I don't know whether its a symptom of me getting old, or just proof that I'm becoming a bit less of a sucker, but I began to tire of reading the same old articles about celebrities and what sort of woman I should be.

Cindy Sherman at the Sprueth Magers Gallery

Master of reinvention and self-portraiture, American photographer Cindy Sherman returns to London’s Sprueth Magers gallery with a brand new show. Cindy Sherman is many things. She was the inspiration for Roisin Murphy’s You Know Me Better video. She was an actress in John Waters's film Pecker. She created a Marc Jacobs ad campaign photographed by Juergen Teller. She directed a film starring Molly Ringwald. The list goes on, but of cours...

Things Hipsters Hate: Hipstamatics Exhibit

Following the readings modern hipster manual stuffhipstershate dictates, I have another sneaking suspicion of what Hipsters might hate, beyond functional mirrors, the relen...

The Arrogance of the Hollywood Remake

What is everyone's first reaction to hearing that a best-selling book is going to be made into a film? "Shit, they're going to ruin it." No one is ever really excited to hear that one of their favorite books is going to be a movie, through fear that it will be ruined, as countless novels and memoirs have been slaughtered. But, of course, there have also been brilliant adaptations like The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and Marley and ...

What We're Looking Forward To in 2011

After enduring the struggled celebration of the previous year that was the difficult comedy show known as Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2010, I'm pretty excited about 2011 and so are a lot of people.  Whilst this does seem to be the year Michael McIntyre takes over the airwaves (grumble) there's a lot to be pleased about.

Louise Bourgeois's "Fabric Works"

You might know her best for her spider sculptures but a new book shows a different side to the art of Louise Bourgeois. Last year the extraordinary Louise Bourgeois sadly passed away at the age of 98. With a career that includes significant contributions to both modern art and contemporary art she is also credited with founding what has become known as ‘confessional art’.  Working mainly in the medium of sculpture Bourgeois is perhaps best known for...

BitchBuzz Review: Amer

Amer promises to deliver a stylish modern thriller in homage to Italian directors of the 1970’s but is it all style and no content? Amer is a debut feature for Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani, a young couple who both wrote and directed the film. They speak very animatedly and fondly about the film being in homage to two of the most respected Italian horror directors, Mario Bava and Dario Argento. The pulp fiction novels whose plots formed the ...

BitchBuzz Travel: Weekender's Guide to Prague

If you're thinking of jet-setting off on a weekend break in the New Year in a quasi romantic meets a celebration-of-surviving-Christmas, Prague is a pretty damn good place to go.  AVG were good enough to send us to the snowy Czech capital last week, so I've gathered up a list of the top places to see, delving through a suspiciously large number of photos of bridges and buildings to bring yo...

The Quiet Grrl Riot

The biggest revolution this year may be one you didn't even notice. The year end reviews seem to be having a nerd-gasm over The Social Network, which I figured out finally—thanks to Edgar Wright's roundup for a 'gentleman's magazine'—is all about "geeks as gangsters" and not the merits of a very uneven film with an often choppy script. I realise any film that allow genteel suburban white guys feel a surge of vicarious toughness will be a hit (h...
