Friends with Benefits: The Anti-RomCom?

By Cate Sevilla

You may remember that not so long ago, Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher made a little film together called No Strings Attached.

They were friends! Who had sex! Crazy!

And now with another take on this whole "sleeping with your best friend" story are Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. (Is anyone else feeling like The Social Network, Black Swan and That '70s Show have combined in some weird way?)

The hook is that Friends with Benefits is supposed to tell the story of how Dylan (Timberlake) and Jamie's (Kunis) relationship gets "complicated" after they start sleeping together while at the same time avoiding all of those (vomit inducing, cringe-worthy) romantic comedy stereotypes and clichés.

It sounds like a tall order, but the trailer shows that they might actually be able to pull it off. Maybe. I'm still not certain.

It looks funny, there are actual shots of a bit of cunningulus action which is practically unheard of in any romantic comedy, and Andy Samberg is in it. (PHWOAR). All of these things get a big thumbs up from me - I just hope Friends with Benefits doesn't let us down. Because lord knows, it certainly has the potential to.

Friends with Benefits in in theaters in the US on 22 July 2011, and in the UK September 2011.

Andy Samberg, really?! O_o I have the opposite reaction. As soon as I saw him in it, I thought, "Nope." Curse that Timberlake, he's just so likable, I almost changed my mind.

I will slyly watch it. But will probably not admit to it, because I love nonsense like that. I suspect though, that what I regard as 'terrible chick flicks' are actually the good ones and I haven't seen how bad they can be..
