No matter what sector of the music industry, it’s always assumed that successful female pop stars hate each other. In the noughties it was all about Britney vs Christina, and then Christina vs Mariah Carey, and then Katy Perry vs Lady Gaga - but apparently they’re fine now.
While it is sexist that women are always compared to each other and the media tries to manipulate things they’ve said or done to create some fiery feud - sometimes, female pop stars perpetuate this stereotype by, well, talking shit.
Before Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj got in to a war of words, lady legends like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston and Madonna and Janet Jackson were all involved in one giant Diva vs Diva clusterfuck.
The completely brilliant “Diva on Diva” video is made up of archived footage, capturing what female pop stars have said about each ther behind their backs, what they’ve said to each other’s faces, and how their opinions of each other have (or haven’t) changed.
Whoever put this together is a genius.
Me - ow.
Most of this footage was from the ‘90s, and things seem to have changed a bit due to the internet and social media. One pop start won’t just tell reporters in Japan they don’t really care for another pop star’s music and expect it to go unnoticed. Megastars like Lady Gaga seem to be more careful about what they say, and accept responsibility for their words, and even when people do slip-up, they have YouTube, Twitter or their blog to apologize and explain.
But even with Twitter, I still wouldn't want to get on Mariah Carey’s bad side. Eesh.
