BitchBuzz at Comic Con: The Best of the Best

By Kate Kotler

The 40th International Comic Con has come and gone; and, I'm exhausted and feeling like a limp noodle after running around all weekend chasing stories to share with you from the con.

There was SO much that I saw that I couldn't really share with you guys that Cate suggested that I give you a list of my highlights, day by day, so that you'd have a fuller picture of exactly how much awesomesauce I encountered in my four days in sunny San Diego.

Thursday, 7/23:

For several hours I sat in Ballroom 20 in the VIP section chatting with Geoff Garrett - a co-producer on the USA show Psych!  He shared some insights with me about James Roday and he and his fiancee chatted with me about a range of really awesome topics.  They were so friendly and nice!

I tweeted at @janinaz (Janina Gavankar) during the Quantum Quest panel and she checked out BitchBuzz and agreed to a 1:1 chat.

The Female Icons in Sci Fi panel was AWESOME!  It was totally sweet to hear Sigourney Weaver, Eliza Dushku, Zoe Saldana and Elizabeth Mitchell talk about their experiences as women in power roles in sci fi.

BRUCE CAMPBELL!  Need I say more?  (The Burn Notice panel was so awesome it made me cry tears of joy!)

I hooked up with Janina G. and we had a super awesome two hour long chat.  (Check out our exclusive interview on BitchBuzz!)

I got to meet the CEO of deviantART!

I accidentally started a "tweetwar" with a Daily Show corospondent.

I coined the phrase "tweetwar."

I took a picture of a Dalek!!!!

I talked to the BBC publicity people who were working really hard to get me a 1:1 interview with David Tennant.

I got to hang out with awesome TMNT uber-fans and some other cool ladies staying at the Lucky D Hostel in downtown San Diego.

 Friday, 7/24:

As soon as I got to the con, I stumbled upon Darth Vader (who was there for Star Wars day) and I totally geeked out and took a picture with him!

I totally saw Lou Ferrigno (THE Incredible Hulk) giving an interview.

I saw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator Kevin Eastman signing comics at a booth.

I had a great conversation with Hope Larson (Chiggers, Grey Horses, Salamander Dream) that will be published as part of my "Women to Watch" column later this week on BitchBuzz!

I saw awesome, awesome Star Wars costumes!

made friends with the publicity people at the BBC booth in hopes of getting a 1:1 interview with David Tennant!

I saw Katee Sackhoff, Keifer Sutherland and the cast of 24 giving scoops about the 8th Season.

I saw Joss Whedon and an exclusive screening of an unaired episode of Dollhouse (that costarred Janina Gavankar!)

I talked with the director of the indie movie Cigarette Girl about doing an interview for BitchBuzz later next week (keep your eyes peeled!)

 Saturday, 7/25:

I met Russell T. Davis, got his autograph - got an autographed card for a lucky BitchBuzz reader - and, told him all about BitchBuzz.

Russell told me that he "loved the name BitchBuzz" and would check out the site.

I talked with a BBC rep who said to me, "Oh Kate, you know that if you get to meet David you're just going to be all 'David I LURVE you!'"  (And, that made me laugh & blush!

I totally geeked out about Firefly, Dollhouse, Buffy, Doctor Who, Torchwood and other sci fi stuff in the press room with Simon Fleischmann (WhedonAge.com), Robert Peterson (CinCity2000.com) and Chris Ullrich (TheFlickCast.com).

I got to meet and schedule an interview with Brittney Powell (Safety Geeks.)

I talked to someone about setting up an interview with Billy West and Katy Segal from Futurama! at a later date... (keep your eyes peeled!)

I got to hang out with the awesome Mom of the coordinator of CCI Guest Services.

I talked to A LOT of fans of Doctor Who...

I found out what the hell was up with the "Free Hugs."  (Basically a goodwill campaign started by a couple of kids to keep people from being cranky at Comic Con.)

James Callis (Dr. Gaius Balter, Battlestar Galactica) lit my cigarette and chatted with me about Comic Con.

I got a picture of a Cyberman and several incarnations of the Doctor.

I got to hang out with Rory from BBCAmerica and chat for a bit about how awesome his job is.

I SAW Russell T. Davis, John Barrowman and DAVID TENNANT introduce the first ever "legal" screenings of Children of Earth and Planet of the Dead.

I got a picture of David Tennant and he said "hi" to me... *dies*

I set up a very special Doctor Who interview which you'll have to keep reading BitchBuzz to find out about.

 Sunday, 7/26:

I met Jonathan Ross and his lovely daughters.  He sent me an exclusive photo of David Tennant's bum that he took on his iPhone before the Doctor Who panel.

Jonathan then tweeted the BitchBuzz URL and my Twitter ID, causing massive traffic to BitchBuzz which crashed our servers! (How cool is that?)

I wandered by the BBC booth, answered a trivia question correctly and got myself a massively large Doctor Who tote bag (for FREE!)

After a long weekend of running around I was able to finally just wander the floor of Comic Con.  I saw some crazy costumes, ran into people I knew from way back in the day, bought a t-shirt that says "Awesomesauce" (a term which my friend Liz coined back in the day) and just chilled.

I had a chance to chat with actress Britteny Powell and the team behind Safety Geeks (stay tuned for that interview!)

Here's the thing: I bet some of you are HELLA jealous that I got to go to Comic Con, do all these awesome things, meet all these fabulous people and got all this free stuff!

Well, I wish I'd been able to take each and every one of you along with me to Comic Con this year... But, since I wasn't able to do that the very least I can do is to give you my SCHWAG!

That's right, BitchBuzzers - I'm giving away my Comic Con schwag to YOU - the loyal readers of this fabulous website!  Stay tuned for a post from Cate detailing how you can win my stuff.  Prizes include lots of collectables, an autographed copy of the Safety Geeks DVD AND a Doctor Who postcard signed by Russell T. Davis!

As for me - well I'm getting on my flight to SFO and hopefully by the time y'all are fuhreaking out about getting my goodies from the con I'll be half way home to snuggling up in my own bed with my puppy dog.  Cheers from Comic Con 2009!
