Debra Granik's film of the novel by Daniel Woodrell offers a bleak world and an engaging 17-year-old heroine, Ree Dolly. She's not fighting (or kissing) vampires, she's not wondering what boys think of her and she's not shopping. Ree (played with finesse and grace by the amazing Jennifer Lawrence) takes care of her younger siblings and her mentally ill mother, dreams of joining the Army as a solution to her problems and needs to find her missing ne'er-do-well father really badly.

When I told people I was taking a trip to Amsterdam last week, the majority of them made wisecracks about the red light district and coffee shops. The capital of the Netherlands offers a wealth of things to see, culture, history and entertainment but these days a lot of people only seem to associate it with the sleaziest s...

TFL’s much lauded bike scheme is nearly a month old. Affectionately dubbed Boris Bikes, these chunky two-wheeled delights are certainly making ripples around town. There were many detractors to the scheme believing that they would get nicked, defaced or left neglected whilst London continued to bus, tube and car it around town – however, there are more and more people connecting and using the scheme.

Going to classes can be really boring. Like, really boring. Classes that you have to pay for are even worse. However, there are some classes out there that are much more interactive. Classes that you actually learn something for, are affordable, and totally worth the time and money you’ve spent there.

I will forever associate “Annie Hall” with my first kiss - a dreadfully awkward and nausea-inducing moment that sent me fleeing to the bathroom to free myself from the trammels of his embrace and questionable breath. Was it what he said just before he kissed me or the kiss itself that brought my peanut-butter and jelly sandwich from lunch surging back? Maybe both. It took years before I could watch the film without suffering any unfortunate bouts of queasiness.

HBO what are you doing to me? No, put your giant wad of cash down, McDuck, and listen. The following will be graphic and full of foul words, just like you like it...The fuck are you doing? My name is Rosina Rubylips and I have an addiction. OK, I have several addictions, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about, thank you. The one thing they’re most likely going to have to take me on Intervention for is vampire shit. I don’t want to, like, suck anyone’s blood or any...

Last weekend saw the first of what will, hopefully, be an annual new festival on the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex. Billed as a 'celebration of creative British cool', Vintage at Goodwood aimed to inject a bit of glamour back into the UK festival calendar and bring music, fashion, art and design back together where they belong.

I tend to be a bit late when it comes to watching movie trailers and online videos that everyone on Twitter is currently RTing themselves silly over. (For example, I just now watched Double Rainbow Guy. Welcome to last week, loser. ) However, I like to think this allows me to properly digest the latest memes and really analyze what’s going on online. (No, I didn’t get that from

One of the good things about living abroad getting to avoid the firsthand effects of some of the lackluster adolescent musical acts that are currently polluting the American media at high speeds (the likes of Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus & Ke$ha among other pre-pubescents that don't quite understand the meaning of talent. If you need to put a $ sign in your name to be original, you're trying too hard).
