As Bitch Magazine has already observed, the sky is blue, water is wet, and the Oscar nominations are a big feminist disappointment. This seems to be the year they officially become as irrelevant as the Grammys, in industry showcase that reflects no vision of reality outside the industrial boardrooms. In a year when awards can be offered ...

The Pirates! is a series of books that follows a group of pirates on their adventures. Based on this description alone, one imagines the same tales of nautical mayhem that so many of us have enjoyed since childhood: pirate booty, maybe some mermaids, and daring sword fights galore. Gideon Defoe throws those conventions of the genre out the window, however. He creates something, which simply put, is fucking hysterical. The best way I can describe it is to allude to Monty Python. It’s ...

I hate to burst the happy Oscar nomination bubble, but things are pretty shitty for women in film right now.Yes, Rooney Mara may have kicked ass in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Meryl Streep made an utterly convincing Iron Lady. But what about the women behind the cameras?

She has played a mean spirited 30 something, a slinky sci-fi assassin and a cold-blooded killer. There can be no denying that Charlize Theron is one heck of an actress. In a Hollywood awash with identikit manic pixie dream girls and aspiring bombshells, Theron refuses to conform to any set type. Beautiful she may be, but the lady isn’t afraid to play it ugly and embrace the darkness of a gritty role.

Three years after a very well received debut, The Big Pink brings us Future This. In sound the albumis a departure from their 2009 A Brief History of Love, but it also seems like a natural next step. The album starts out strong with Stay Gold, the catchiest and most upbeat track of the lot, and while things taper off a bit a from there, The Big Pink remain energetic throughout, an audible feat of Future This.

One of the things I love about visiting other cities is discovering the number of interesting museums and galleries that a new location has to offer. Whether you want to learn or be entertained - or both! - there is bound to be an art gallery, science museum, or even an interesting way to learn about the social history of that city.

It's the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens. If somehow the news has escaped you, surely you could tell from the deluge of BBC productions assaulting us from every side (even if they don't always seem to be enjoying it).

It isn’t a location that instantly springs to mind when planning a city break. But it looks as though 2012 is set to be the year that Birmingham steps into the travel spotlight. The UK’s second city has ranked 19th in the New York Times list of “The 45 Places to Go in 2012” - a place ahead of the final frontier itself – space.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but Zooey Deschanel has a new show called New Girl. Oh heck, who am I kidding? Of course you’ve heard about this because the entire Internet is in love with her, it's probably trending on Twitter, and there's gigantic ad of her entire body plastered in just about every tube station in London.
